Making Safeguarding Personal

Making Safeguarding Personal (often called MSP) is about putting you at the centre of safeguarding.

If you are worried about abuse, neglect, or feel unsafe, safeguarding should not just be something that is “done to you”. It should be done with you, based on what matters to you.

This means:

  • You are listened to
  • Your views and wishes are respected
  • You are involved in decisions about your safety and support

The aim is to help you feel safer while respecting your independence, choices, and wellbeing.

What does this mean for you?

If you are involved in a safeguarding concern, you should expect:

To be listened to

You will be asked what is important to you and what you want to happen.

To have a say in decisions

Where possible, you will be involved in deciding what support or action is taken.

To feel safe and supported

You will receive help to stay safe and reduce risks in a way that works for you.

To be treated with dignity and respect

Your values, wishes and lifestyle will be respected throughout.

How safeguarding can help

Everyone’s situation is different. Your outcomes might include:

  • Feeling safer in your own home
  • Having more control over your life
  • Being supported to stop abuse or harm
  • Getting help to rebuild confidence and independence
  • Improving your health and wellbeing

Safeguarding is about what matters to you, not just following a process.

What if I need support to be involved?

You may be offered extra support to help you take part, such as:

  • Someone to help you understand information
  • An advocate to speak on your behalf
  • Support with communication if needed

If you find it difficult to make decisions and have no one to support you, an independent advocate may be arranged to help represent your views.
